Outreach and Essential Items
Our staff and volunteers are present at a wide range of community activities and events. They share information about domestic violence and about essential resources, and they distribute basic needs items, such as nutritious food and PPE, hygiene, cleaning and baby supplies.
Distribution of essential items was especially important at the beginning of the pandemic – from May to November 2020, we distributed 2,934 food boxes, 1,835 hot meals and 2,308 gallons of milk, as well as tons of masks, hand sanitizer, shampoo, soap, feminine hygiene supplies and diapers.
Referrals to Resources and Services
We support community members in finding what they need through our network of strong partnerships. This could include legal assistance, healthcare, public benefits, emergency financial assistance or youth programming. We do what are called “warm handoffs” to our partners so that community members are more likely to successfully get connected.
Educational Programming
We work hard to raise awareness about domestic violence and other important topics through our educational programming, which ranges from small community-based classes to workshops at national conferences. We facilitate sessions almost every month and the vast majority are free for participants. We are able to facilitate them in English and/or Spanish, and in person and virtually. Common topics include mental health (stigma around mental health disorders, trauma, codependence, etc.), personal growth and goal setting, and financial literacy. We also facilitate interactive sessions that integrate activities like yoga and arts and crafts.
Skill Building
We promote economic independence by providing opportunities for survivors and other community members to develop skills in areas like cooking, urban agriculture and computers. Click on the links below for more information about classes that we are currently offering.
